Gopal: I was thinking about your comments today when I saw an ad from a dentist for a teeth whiting process called "Zoom 2". When I saw this I thought that every dentist that had been offering the "Zoom" whiting process now has a second rate product and they will need to upgrade. Teeth whiting is not the same as software in other parts of the world, but you get the point - everyone will want an improved product or service so if you can innovate fast enough, that might help solve the piracy problem!

Being from that part of the world, none of this - make your products attractive such that a customer would WANT your product, the customer would WANT to be part of your community of users - will work. Money is everything in that part of the world. Why? That part of the world could not afford anything at one point in time and hence if you wanted to use anything, you had to find a way to get it and software is one thing you can easily have without taking it away from the original owner.

To change this mentality, now that people can afford software ($30 is very cheap at least in India given the way people spend money there), you need to use some forceful tactics. And I think, Microsoft is doing the right thing here - using the feather first (annoyance of the black screen) before they use the hammer (hindrance).

My two cents.

Jim, I agree. I think something more intrusive would be really bad because of the false positives. I wonder how much less they could do, and still have a positive effect.

Scott: I hear where you are coming from. I guess the nag feature coupled with the fact that Microsoft has a policy that appears to let folks who unintentionally ended up with a fake version "get right" for free is sorta a one-two punch to solving the problem. However, I'll bet 'ya Paul Thurrott was QUITE upset when WGA flagged his box as being counterfeit!

I don't think the nag screen will help much with intentional pirates. It will help with the 'unwitting victims' of piracy - they do exist. Paul Thurrott (Super site for windows) purchased windows media center from an online vendor, and received a pirated copy, which WGA flagged as such. Paul has an MSDN subscription, and is a credible guy (also does the Windows Weekly podcast with Leo Laporte).

Considering that there are somewhere around a billion Windows users, even a 99.999% effective approach would cause 1000 people with legitimate copies to be affected by anything MS does. So having it be an annoyance rather than a hindrance is probably a good idea.

I prefer a "resolvable annoyance" to an "inhibitive DRM policy", personally.
