Dov: you bring up a very good point - local pricing is critical to a products success. Microsoft is having the same problem as they try to expand into China - Windows costs way to much for the average consumer so they go out and buy bootleg copies. Match your prices to what the local market will bear and you'll cut down on people's need to go out and buy bootleg products...

If an original CD (for instance) costs US$ 25,00 (that's the average price here in Brazil), and the pirate version costs US$ 3,00. If this is really bothering the industry, product managers should review their costs and prices urgently. I bet if a CD would cost US$ 10,00 people would accept to buy the original version, but the difference today is so high, that honest people feel almost stupid when they buy the original product.

So, although you 4 approaches are really valid, if you charge for your product several times what a fake (of similar quality, of course) product can cost, maybe there is something wrong with your business model.
