Gopal: Wow -- product upgrades that just appear, how nice would that be? I think that you are right on the money, Microsoft is in for a world of hurt as they move from the old way of making money (selling software) to the new way (selling a service). I hope that they have good product managers...!

Jim,
I think the main issue here is caused by an outdated delivery model is what is wrong - MS wants to continue to force installs and upgrades on users via the outdated install/upgrade model whereas what customers actually want is a Saas model where no one has to care about these installs and upgrades. MS does not want to do this because they have continue to show their revenue streams to Wall Street. But this story is probably not going to have a nice ending - MS in my opinion will be forced to switch Office to a Saas model for survival purposes or risk losing their leadership to someone else.

I have been using Google docs quite a bit these days and it is letting me do a lot of what I need to do. Do I even know which version it uses - no. But when new features come out, it is there for me to use. Agreed that it is free. But as you know, companies such as Salesforce.com that charge subscription fees, follow the same model that when new releases are out, the new features just appear for me to use. This is what the world wants except for Microsoft.
